An Simple Solution to Lower the Risk of Childhood Infections

As the COVID-19 pandemic turns into an endemic, the disease is still around but it’s at a level that is not causing significant disruption in our daily lives.

That means we are going to start surrounding ourselves with great food and the ones we love – and sometimes all of this togetherness can lead to passing around icky infections because of inattentive hand hygiene.

Be sure to always wash your children’s hands before eating and if they are dirty from all the fun of playing outside. Teach the young ones early to not cough or sneeze into their hands. Often the “dabbing” technique works well. Ask the kiddos what that dance move is and they should be be more than happy to show you! Most importantly, tell the little ones to avoid using unclean hands to rub their eyes, ears, and mouth.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), washing hands with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of microbes on your hands. It is best to wash hands for 15-20 seconds (or the amount of time it takes to sing Happy Birthday)! If soap and water is unavailable to you or your child at the moment, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is the next best thing. Carry a miniature one in your purse, pocket, or nappy bag.
